Associate Professor at UCLA’s Asian American Studies Department, Dr. Lucy Burns is the author of the esteemed book: Puro Arte: On the Filipino Performing Body. Published by NYU Press, the book, “explores the emergence of Filipino American theater and performance from the early 20th century to the present. It stresses the Filipino performing body's location as it conjoins colonial histories of the Philippines with U.S. race relations and discourses of globalization.” The Association for Asian American Studies Board has chosen Puro Arte as one of the winners for Outstanding book published in 2012 for Cultural Studies. The book award committee writes, “The book exemplifies interdisciplinarity ranging from archival studies and historiography to drama and performance studies.” The CSW would like to extend its heartiest congratulations to Dr. Burns and we are so excited that this book is getting the recognition it deserves.
